War-date Union cavalryman's letter written by Pvt. Jeremiah H. Obetz, Co. G, 9th Penn. Cavalry, "Camp Bruce, [named for Col. Sanders D. Bruce, 20th Kentucky Infantry], July 7, 1862," 4pp. 8vo., to his friend Henry C. Gringrich, reading, in part: "…I have never been punished…I do not know how soon it may come…I have seen the saddest 4 of July I have ever…see[n]…on the 3d our sergeant H[enry] Nissly shot himself in the leg and then was conveyed to the hospital…on the 5th we had to hear the sad news that his brother Lieut. D. H. Nissley was drowned in the Green river will undoubtedly be hard for their old mother…and the whole company…in mourning for them…they have been two of our best officers etc…Lieut. D. H. Nissley in company with Corporal Nagle and Bugler Mooney went to the river to take a bath. Lieut. went in first and when he came about halfway into the river he was taken with the cramps and assistance could not be given as the Corp. is a bad swimmer and Mooney is too weak to assist heavy man as him so search was made for him but could not be found till next morning at 9…then he was brought into the city…they got a metallic coffin and myself and Corp. Martin Van Buren] Neavling, A. Hineaman in company of 3 others stood guard over him until Monday at 11 o'clock. Then he was conveyed to the depot and sent to his respective friends in Mt. Joy were he will be buried. We took him to the depot i[n] military style etc. Please inform my father of this…our whole company feels regretful for our Gallant officer, D. H. Nisley…J. H. Obetz."
