War-date Union cavalryman's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Hiram L. Markham, Co. A, 24th Conn. Vols., "Grove's Plantation, State of Louisiana near Carthage, 25 miles below Vicksburg, April 21, 1862[3]," to his cousin, in part: "…I am sitting under some kind of a tree I could not tell you…the negroes call the Chaina tree. The other two I have no name for…I would like to send you a peach, but they are most too large…I took and cut the peach in halves and hollowed out one half and inked it [peach pit, included]…a week ago the rebels attacked our cavalry pickets about a mile from this place. They crossed over the [Vermillion] bayou in the night [on April 17th], about 500 men attacked our picket of…25 men. The result was they wounded 2, captured 4 of our men…some arms and horses…made good their escape across the bayou before we got them…the gunboats & transports running the blockade [at Vicksburg]…one of the transports that ran through came up…day before yesterday and landed at our camp…she did not get struck at all…as to Johnston you will probably see him before this reaches you for he is discharged and gone home. When I first found out he had the small pox I did not write of it. I thought it would not be best…H. L. Markham." The original stamped transmittal cover and peach pit (relic) are included.
