A good group of seven (7) war-date Quartermaster Department, Army of the Tennessee documents, totaling 8pp. 4to., to Lt. Col. Judson David Bingham (1831-1909) Graduate USMA 1857, brevet brigadier general April 1865, concerning supplying Grant's army during the siege of Vicksburg and afterwards. A letter of note in this group is this Union officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Capt. Gilbert Ashville Pierce, 9th Indiana Vols., as assistant quartermaster. Vicksburg, Miss., July 30, 1963, to Lt. Col. J. D. Bingham, Chief Quartermaster Dept., complaining, in part: "I am having a good deal of difficulty with buildings: this is nothing strange…and is to be expected…the difficulty can be partially remedied by giving me authority to assign buildings by your order, or that of the commanding general. It is hard to convince occupants, having Provost Marshal permits, that they must vacate upon my order…a great deal of delay is thus occasioned which is…very vexations. Permission is given by the different commanders for citizens to move into ton and then when their houses are required, it is next to impossible to get the people out…is really a hardship after permitting them to move into the…premises. I have a dozen officers now waiting for quarters…I propose to select a number of suitable buildings for such purposes…I require some positive authority. Authority also which cannot be interfered with by any officer who judges that it will be a hardship to take certain buildings for military purposes…the authority shall…be authorized, and only in case of emergency, will people be required to give up…their premises…I wish to quietly, but quickly accomplish the matter. A large number of buildings are occupied by hangers on and followers of the army…G. A. Pierce, Capt. & a. q. m." Overall VG (7 documents.)
