Partly-printed Document Signed, “G. S. Palmer” Surgeon U.S. Vols. in Charge, 1p. issued from “Lincoln General Hospital” Washington, D.C., 1863, and reads “I hereby certify that Corpl. Jno. M. Hilbert Co. L 4 Regt Pa Cavalry was not mustered in this Hospital on rolls of March and April 1863...” Fine. John M. Hilbert enlisted as a corporal in the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry in November 1861, he was taken prisoner and would later serve time in the “Lincoln General Hospital.” Opened in December 1862, Lincoln General was the largest of the military hospitals in the area built by the Army to take care of the Civil War casualties. It was located on Capitol Hill, 15 blocks east of the Capitol building. The hospital complex included 20 pavilions, arranged in two lines forming a V, and 25 tent wards, which provided altogether a bed capacity of 2,575.
