War-date Union sodier Autograph Letter Signed by John H. Gray, Co. D, 19th Indiana Battery, 4pp. folio, Perryville, Kentucky, Hospital No. 6, October 17, 1862, and reads in part: “...Comfortably housed, a house overlooking Perryville...The Rebels were not all buried yet on Tuesday for I walked off from our house about 1/4 mile and came upon one lying half rotted, his face black with exposure and decay. O, how horrible a man left upon the field to rot unknown & uncared for. Almost every house in town is filled with the sick, wounded & dying. In fact, this is a palce of mourning. We see hundreds of Rebel prisoners every day who say they are tired of war...the horrors of war are almost seen in the hospitals of the wounded where you hear groans, expressions of agony and severe pain...” More. Very good condition.
