An odd war-date Union soldier's letter, in which, it sounds as if he stole his comrade's pro-McClellan election tickets in order to help Lincoln's reelection! It is hard to tell, but you decide. What follows, is a, 4pp. 8vo., written, on U. S. Sanitary Commission stationery, by Pvt. Jacob Pfautz, Co. H, 203rd Penn. Vols., "Camp Lancaster, [Deep Bottom,] Virginia Nov. 23, 1864," to his friend Henry C. Gingrich, in part: "…I am not in the regiment anymore. I am in Deep Bottom on the bank of the James river. Here we do provost duty. They took so much out of each company. Twenty of ours…some are guarding the pontoon bridge and some are further up the river…about [your brother] Daniel [Gingrich] I cant tell…he was sick the last I saw him…before the election…tell mother how I am and where I am and how I am getting along…Old Abe has got a pretty good majority. I turned a couble to vote for him. I made use of the tickets which you send me. I fooled a good many that meant I vote for Mac. If they asked what I vote. I told them. I vote for Mac…I took their tickets all I could get…one found it out afterwards that I fooled him…he was awful mad over me. I don't know much of importance anymore…direct 203 Reg. P. V., Com. H, 10 Army Corpse via Washington, D. C…Jacob Pautz."
