A good war-date ex-Union soldier's letter, 2 3/4pp. legal size folio, written by Joseph Slichter (newly discharged from three years service with the 32nd Penn. Vols.), Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 6-10, 1864, to his parents concerning his looking for a fresh start as a railroad worker in Nashville, in part: "…received two letters from Jacob…one the other day containing a certificate from my discharge for which I feel very proud…without my certificate I could not vote on Tuesday next but now I van vote &…I need not fear an draft that may take place…there is several other churches in the place also Old General Jackson's old residence is in this city, but his new & last residence is up the river some 12 miles from town thats were his last remains are now resting. Andrew Johnson, running for vice president live here also & in a very fine large brick house…a very pretty lot around the house. They have also a very large and fine lime stone Capital. The building is made all out of lime stone drest off nice & smooth in very large long stones. See this is the Capital of Tennessee…this is so very wicked…sort of a place…I cannot enjoy life as I should…at home…but here a man is not safe to go up town after dark for many men have been murdered. Others have been robbed of all their valuables. For my part I do not venture on the streets after night. My work shop is not over a good gun shot from my quarters and I always have company home…Joseph Slichter…my address is N. & C. [Nashville & Chattanooga] R. R. shop, Nashville, Tennessee." Slichter's phonetic spelling has been corrected. The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit of soiling, else VG
