A rare partly-printed Union regimental "Ration Return" document substituted for Southern civilian aid entitled: "Ration Return of 'Destitute Citizens of Mecklenburg County, Va.' giving a total of five thousand rations of bacon, hard bread, codfish and mackerel to the citizens of Mecklenburg for their relief following the end of a war that devastated the state of Virginia as well as the remainder of the south. Signed and made official by Brevet Brigadier General JOSEPH JOHN MORRISON (1831-1911), as colonel of the 16th New York Heavy Artillery and Capt. William R. Hedges, as provost marshall.
