A very rare war-date Iron Brigade death certificate for Sergeant George H. Pettinger, Co. G, 24th Michigan Vols. (Iron Brigade) who was killed at the battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. The Army of the Potomac's famed Iron Brigade took part in many of that army's many historic clashes with Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Their tenacity at the battle of Groveton in August, 1862 won them respect and when Lee's men ran into them at Gettysburg one surpassed Rebel is reported to have shouted, "Here's those damned black-hat fellers again. It ain't no militia. It's the Army of the Potomac!" Unfortunately, Sgt. Pettinger's last day on Earth came on that hot July 1st afternoon and his remains are now buried in the National Cemetery at Gettysburg plot, MI A-5. The partly-printed adjutant general's office document, 1p. oblong 8vo., Detroit, Michigan, Aug. 9, 1864, reads, in part: "I certify that Sergeant George Pettinger, Co. G, Twenty Fourth Regiment Michigan Infantry, enlisted at Detroit on the Seventh of August 1862…was duly mustered into the service of the United States for the term of three years…[was] killed in action at Gettysburg, July 1st 1863…Jno. Robertson, Adjutant General." Docketed on the verso showing that his grateful state of Michigan paid a certain William Purcell of the 9th Ward the bounties due his family from Aug. 1, 1864 up until July 1, 1865. Fold splits from heavy use repaired on the verso with stamp hinge style tape that can be easily removed with some soiling, else VG. A must have for any Gettysburg scholar's collection as Iron Brigade battle related documents seldom appear in the marketplace.
