War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Jacob Pfautz, Co. H, 203rd Penn. Vols., "In front of Richmond, Jan. 1, 1865," to his friend Henry C. Gingrich, in part: "…the rest of [the] regiment came back again on the 30[th]. They were down in North Carolina. They were 22 days on the water. They were not off the boat…the gunboats that were along with them had a sharp engagement with the enemy down there on the first of Christmas at Fort Fisher. They fought all day and at last they silenced their guns then they went ashore and took some two hundred prisoners and nailed [spiked] their guns in the fort. Then they had to fall back…they made a pretty good haul…now it is so cold that it would freeze a dead niger white…direct 203 Reg. P. V., Com. H, 24 Army Corpse via Washington, D. C…Jacob Pautz." VG
