War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. legal size folio, written by Pvt. Daniel E. Gingrich, Co. H, 203rd Penn. Vols., Hampton, Va., April 8, 1865, to his brother Henry C. Gingrich, in part: "…the great Babylon has fallen! And I am in hopes that ere this reaches you, you will have the cheering news that Lee with his staggering army was overtaken and forced to surrender…(3d inst.) a dispatch came to Fortress Monroe with the cheering news that the Stars and Stripes were raised on the Rebel capitol early in the morning. The Invalid Corps and all the relief guards soon turned out with the band so salute the flag and at 12 o'clock M. the Union guns began to speak in Fortress Monroe and all the whistles on the vessels in Hampton Roads were drawer open, bells ringing and cheering that almost deafened the bystanders. The patriotic enthusiasm aroused the sick and wounded…it was an army of veterans, the scars show it…if ever, I come home again, [may] the Stars and Stripes waive over every Capital in the Union and peace…established in the whole nation…Danl. E. Gingrich…". Light soiling, else VG
