An unusual pair of late war-date "Affidavit For Wife" documents, both partly-printed, 1p. oblong 12mo., giving state aid to the families of Wisconsin soldiers serving in the field, Dodge, Co., Wisconsin, March 5, 1865 and March 11, 1865, attesting, in small part: "…that Wm. McClain [on the roles as McLane)…is a resident of said town and has been mustered into the service of the United States, in Co. G First Cav. Reg't…aid soldier has not deserted, been discharged, or demised from service; that he has a family dependent upon him for support consisting of a wife & 3 children…he is personally acquainted with Maria McClain who signs the order, and knows that she is the wife having charge of the family dependent upon the said soldier…". With five-cent tax stamp affixed to one document. McLane's regiment helped in the capture of Jeff Davis in May 1865. Minor stains, else VG. (2 documents.)
