Scathing anti-Reconstruction newspaper, entitled: "YANKEE NOTIONS" 30pp. quarto, ca, 1866, with caricature of President Andrew Johnson as "Andy J. Cock-a-hoop" laying a reconstruction egg on Congress. Published by the American News Company, New York City. This publication is decidedly reminiscent of the the Native Americans gang in epic film, "Gangs of New York" who fought against anyone who was not a "real" American citizen. The paper is peppered thought with many derogatory stories and cartoons poking fun at the newly established citizen and voting rights granted the South's former slaves and the push for women's suffrage. Examples include a shoe-shine scene cartoon in which two men (as Irish rogues) warn one another to be careful on addressing an approaching Black man as he might soon make congressman, (page 364) while, on the back cover, a depiction of Thaddeus Stevens and Wendell Phillips run towards a fire, that had erupted because of "Colored Men & Women's Rights" and "Female Suffrage," dragging the Constitution with a worried black man in tow. Minor wear, else fine.
