War-date Confederate officer's Southern-made CDV of Lt. Col. William A. Robertson, as Medical Director of Buckner's Corps, in uniform, by Lilienthal, New Orleans, La. William A. Robertson first served the Confederacy as a surgeon in the 6th Louisiana Infantry. After the wounding of General Richard Ewell at the battle of Groveton, Va., Robertson assisted in the amputation of the general's leg. Maj. Campbell Brown, 21, the general's trusty staff officer, recalled: "Dr. [William A.] Robertson of La. opened the leg along the track of the ball, in order to show me they were justified in taking it off - a Dr. Launer of Ala. having objected to it - but it had been plainly a necessity." At Gettysburg, he was with Harry Hays' Louisiana brigade. During the course of his service he was severely wounded in action. Signed on the recto, "Wm. A. Robertson, Lt. Col. & Med. Director, Buckner's Corps." Near fine.
