Excellent, 2 1/2" x 6 3/4" silk ribbon with engraved portrait of John C. Breckinridge after the Mathew Brady photograph, with facsimile signature below. These used to show up occasionally, but the supply seems to have dried up. This example is in gem mint condition and looks like the day it was made, original sheen, only a tiny spot at top from being in an album and slight loss from printing to signature. John Cabell Breckinridge (1821-1875), Buchanan's Vice President 1856-1861, Southern Democrat candidate against Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Breckinridge represented Kentucky in the House of Representatives 1851-1855, and was a Senator from that state for nine months in 1861 until being expelled by resolution. Breckinridge served as a Major General in the Confederate Army and was responsible for the defense of Vicksburg in 1862. In 1865 he was Secretary of War in the Cabinet of the Confederate States before escaping to Europe. He returned to Lexington from Europe in 1869 where he resumed his law practice. You will not find a nicer example of this campaign ribbon, search high or low.
