A great Lincoln reelection letter, 4pp. legal size folio, written by Pvt. Jeremiah J. Cake, Battery I, Penn. Light Artillery, "Hd. Qrs., Fort Worth, Va., Sept. 17, 1864," to his friend Henry C. Gingrich, in very small part: "…every letter…I receive from your distinguished town proves that Manheim has at last made itself awake in…doing her share towards fighting the rebellion. You have filled your quota…and you have gone to considerable expense in doing it…these great results have been achieved through a great anxiety of 'getting out of the draft'…Father Abraham calls for '500,000 more'…I should have no objection if he made the call…no able bodied man has any business to be at home these troublesome times…you doubtless remember that on more than one occasion…I took the port of the 'Little Napoleon' when others pronounced him a traitor…that he let golden opportunities…slip. I spoke in his favor…I was quite unwilling to desert my idol…perhaps after reading the platform…the Chicago Convention nominated Gen. McClellan I would become his friend and bootee for him for the presidency…I have read and considered the Chicago Platform, thoroughly…I have no hesitancy…in terming it the weakest and rottenest platform upon which man was ever placed and the Chicago Convention, a most miserable force. I have little love left…for my idol of former years…Had Genl. McClellan been nominated by the Union Party and I thought a change in the Administration necessary…I would vote for him…as matters now stand…I should…vote for the nominees of the Baltimore Convention, Abraham Lincoln and Andy Johnson of Tennessee. I have read the Baltimore Platform. It is broad and comprehensive…and which if carried out will end this war…no sir, I have not now, never had, nor ever will…vote for McClellan. Mr. Lincoln & his platform are good enough for me…it is not merely an idle saying that the 'only hope of the Confederacy is the defeat of Mr. Lincoln,' but it is a fact…take away this one prop from the Confederacy and it will totter to ruins. It cannot stand two months after the re-election of Mr. Lincoln…they are unwilling to treat with the rebels unless they lay down their arms and swear allegiance to the government…I hope the people will go to the polls with open eyes…I hope they want their friends in the army to come home soon…success have crowned the efforts of Sherman & Farragut and success ill crown Grant…with such victories before us we must by victorious in our political campaign and the country will yet be saved…Cake."
