Lincoln assassination related letter, 4pp. 8vo., on "Office of the United States Express Company" stationery, by a certain "William", Muscatine, [N. Y.], May 19, 1865, to his brother, in small part: "…we got the news of Jeff Davis' capture Sunday morning about church time. Our operator belongs to the choir…& he brought the news & gave a copy of the dispatch to the minister & he read it to the congregation. There was a general good feeling manifested all over the House & although many would have shouted Glory under any other circumstances all kept quiet…the only hope we have is that he will meet with his just deserts. I think the sour apple tree ought to be selected & that speedily. We all felt to mourn the loss of our beloved president and I never saw such a general expression of sadness as was depicted in the countenances of nearly everyone. I rejoice…that we still have a man that…will do his duty…William." Light toning, else VG.
