For of Such-A Memorial to Captain Lawrence Chandler Baldwin ([Berkeley, Calif]: by his father Colonel Karl F. Baldwin, Privately Published, [1946?]), 29pp. 240 x 167 mm. (9 3/8 x 6 5/8 in.) bound in original titled boards. With printed image of Lawrence Chandler Baldwin affixed by hand opposite the full title page. With unpaginated introduction. A moving biography of Capt. Baldwin, a 1938 West Point graduate who was stationed at Corregidor in December 1941 where he commanded an antiaircraft battery. Following the surrender of the American stronghold, Baldwin was taken prisoner by the Japanese-first imprisoned in Manila and in late 1944 was moved to the Island of Honshu, Japan. Tragically, his transport was torpedoed in Subic Bay by an American submarine and he was among only ten survivors out of 1600 men. where he died in early 1945 after a long struggle with dysentery, starvation and repeated physical abuse at the hands of his captors. The volume includes a short biography of Baldwin, together with tributes from his comrades-in-arms as well as General Douglas MacArthur assuring his father that "'Mac' is on the road back." Rare Presentation Copy. Offered with the official calling card of Col. Karl Ferguson Baldwin (1885-1967) with ink emendations in his hand. Worldcat identifies only five extant editions in institutional holdings (OCLC 610492736). A few minor marks to boards, pages very clean.
