Transplanted Kentuckian's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by William R. Weldon, Elizabeth, Arkansas, March 17, 1849, back home to his Kentucky family, concerning stripping a young lady after her dress caught fire, reading, in part: "…it is 5 months today since I left home…this is a healthy country…I have been to one wedding lately at the house of Judge Roberson's…I had my gallantry tried the other day. There was a young lady coming to school who was modest, handsome & sensible but had a disease which is very common in Kentucky called the flirts. Miss. Fanny could not be still for a moment. One cold, dry day this young lady was standing by the fire. I came very near telling the young lady she would burn, but thought she would flirt a way soon, but I was mistaken. Her dress caught fire and in a moment was in a flame. She broke for the door with a blaze higher than her head. What to do I did not know…there was no time to be lost & I was under the painful necessity of stripping her. Just think of a young man stripping a lady in company, but as there was no water handy it was done in a moment. Miss. Fanny made a straight shirttail for home…you are not minute enough in your letters…how [do] the horses look? How the Blacks are getting along? How those new convicts are getting along? What church [have] they joined…William R. Weldon." The original manuscript canceled, "Elizabeth, Ark, March 21, [paid] 10," addressed: "A. Weldon, Fancey Farm, KY," transmittal leaf remains attached. Minor spotting, else VG.
