Imprint, “Papers of Thomas Jefferson,” Government document, 29th Congress, 2d Session. Rep. No. 39. Ho. of Reps., January 20, 1847, 8vo. 2 pp. Removed from volume, inner edge a little irregular, short tear at inner margin, ink numeral in top margin of 1p. This a report from the Committee on the Library (of Congress) recommending purchasing the Jefferson manuscripts from Thomas Jefferson Randolph. In part, “That these papers consist in part of official, political, scientific, and miscellaneous letters, ... in the handwriting of Mr. Jefferson , amounting to the number of about forty-two thousand ...” and continues, “it is fit and right that the government should possess itself of all his unpublished papers, and thus forever preserve them against any danger of misapplication or loss." The manuscripts were purchased by the government in 1848.
