War-date Confederate cavalry officer's battle letter, 2pp. oblong 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Louisa County, Va. 65 mile N. W. from Richmond", June 13, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…thank God for his providence which…has shielded me from harm. On the 8th inst. Genl. Hampton left the neighborhood of Richmond with a portion of his command & came here in pursuit of the Yankee Genl. Sheridan who had proceeded us one day…having started out from Grant's army with the greatest cavalry forces ever moved in one body…numbering about 10,000 strong. We came up with him at this place early on the morning of the 11th inst when a general engagement commenced which lasted all day, closing only when night prevented further fighting…yesterday morning 12th inst. the battle commenced again & lasted after dark. The first day we were compelled to fall back with some loss in captured men & horses…& a good many of our men killed & wounded, but the second day we whipped them badly & they are now flying for the north side of the North Anna & we…in hot pursuit. Our forces did not number over one half that of the enemy. I have lost one man captured & one wounded. Genl. Butler is well pleased with our Regt. Our men do finely…A. B. Mulligan…[Thursday 16th June 16, 1864, Childsburg, Va.]…we are now about 35 mile N. W. from Richmond having thoroughly whipped the Great Yankee Genl. Sheridan & & driven him over 50 mile into the yankee lines. He left in the night, leaving his dead & wounded on the field. We are still pursuing him but I do not think we will be able to overtake him as our horses are all tired down. Sheridan remounts his men on fresh horses as fast as their horses break down by taking them from the citizens…God bless you, Alfred." Light soiling, else VG.
