Civilian Letter, “John”, Washington DC, February 1, 1865, 8pp., VG. In part, “That meeting ‘By the by’ was held at the Capital and there was a large crowd there, I can assure you. .. The President & Vice President, Admiral Farragut and a number of Senators were there. ... The President remarked after a General had been telling a good story ‘that one beats mine’.... Since I last wrote, we have had a fire here that did considerable damage. It was the Smithsonian Institution, which caught fire and was nearly destroyed before the flames could be extinguished. ... I would think the Rebs would begin to feel like coming to terms on our conditions for they are losing ground now very fast and they must know their cause is hopeless. ... What great rejoicing there would be if it was made known that Alexander Stephens had come here to accept the terms which Abraham Lincoln considers right. I am willing to let Uncle Abe decide upon what we shall give them and what we shall not. ...”
