An unusual Reconstruction era United States government pardon demanding the "Emancipation of Slaves" as part of the terms of conditions required for a pardon, 1p. 4to. partly printed form issued to respectable Alabama citizen, Wilson R. Brown, reading, in part: "I Wilson R. Brown, of [Marion] the County of Perry, State of Alabama, do solemnly swear…that I will fatefully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States…with reference to the emancipation of slaves: So help me God." Wilson R. Brown moved in 1832-33 to Marion, Ala., and there became a banker and dry goods merchant. He was a steward in the Methodist church, the Superintendent of the Sunday School, President of the Board of Trustees of the Marion Female Seminary, and President of the old Perry Insurance and Trust Company. Signed and made official by Capt. Constantine McMahan of the 11th Missouri Vols. who notes that Mr. Brown's signature is wanted on the form. Minor toning and soiling, else VG
