This collection of 2nd Infantry documents scatters through the period 1869-1871 and is primarily payroll documents which are pre-printed and filled out in manuscript. There are three documents which also have “Description of Servants” listed by name and “Colored”. Also included is a muster roll for Company D, 2nd Infantry, April 30-June 30, 1870 (some tears. When the Civil War ended, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment was sent west to fight against hostile Indian tribes and protect American settlers. With US troops focused on fighting Confederate forces in the east, the Indians of the frontier grew bolder. The vastness of the American frontier meant that the regiment was seldom together, and was spread out, often with only one troop occupying a post.
