CLARK, John Bullock, Sr. (1802-1885) was a member of both the United States Congress and the Confederate Congress. Clark was commissioned colonel of Missouri Mounted Volunteers during the Black Hawk War in 1832, and was selected to command Missouri state forces during the Missouri Mormon War. Clark served as a Senator from Missouri in the First Confederate Congress and a Representative in the Second Confederate Congress. He also served in the field as a brigadier general in the Missouri State Guard. Clark stayed in Richmond until the end of the war. The federal government offered a $10,000 reward for his capture, but he disguised himself, adopted an alias, and fled to Mexico. Clark remained in Mexico until he heard that the federal authorities no longer wanted him. Crossing the border into Texas, Clark was promptly arrested and imprisoned at Fort Jackson, eventually freed by President Johnson. two Autograph Letters Signed “J.B. Clark” written to Col. R.L. Baker, regarding Baker’s removal of command at the Watervliet Arsenal, both from Washington, 4pp., VG. From the first, March 25, 1851, I intended to see Gen. Scott, Secr. Conrad and if necessary Mr. Fillmore ... before I could see any of those gentlemen I am confined ... nerves, muscular and olimentary systems ... he said Crosby’s animosity originated in your refusal to buy of him for the use of the governmen, a worthless mixture ... “ Then in the 4pp letter, April 9, 1851, repeats the charges with no resolution. The Watervliet Arsenal was founded in 1813 to support the, “Second War for Independence,” the War of 1812, the arsenal has been and continues to be a valuable resource for world class defense manufacturing.
