CLAIBORNE John Herbert (1828 -1905) was a prominent Virginia politician and a leading medical administrator commanding a series of hospitals serving wounded Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. Autograph Letter Signed, “John Claiborne” to general Ruggles, December 28, 1861, 1pp., VG. In part, “You will see from the letter which I received a few days ago from Mr. Benjamin, that he cannot give me a staff appointment such as I asked as Quartermaster unless on the recommendation of the Comm’g Officer of a Brigade ... I shall feel obliged for your recommendation ... “
