B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Camp Smith" June 28, 1862, to his mother, in part: "…we are down here buried from the rest of the world where we can never have a chance to meet the foe…I fear that more of our men will die from sickness than the enemy would kill…the officers are not generally exposed but the men are very much so. We had a sad accident happen to one of our men yesterday while on parade. My 3rd Corporal had his head shot off by the accidentally discharge of a gun in the hands of his next file, the man on his right & very instantly killed, My dear mother, it gives me much sorrow to be compelled to be away from you…but it is impossible. My Country demands my services. I must beg that you will not fret nor worry yourself bout me…as to our country thank God. The dam of better prosperity is before us…Monday morning 30th…I am in a great hurry as my company is waiting for me to drill them…A. B. Mulligan." Minor spotting, else VG.
