War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Green Pond, [S. C.], Nov. 2, 1862, to his mother, in part: "…the sickly season is nearly at an end. I trust that I will come off safely…if the occupants cant get to their homes by the time their leases are out…they must bond out anyway…if I could sell both houses for the prices named I would purchase a plantation some where in Barnwell…living is cheaper in the middle country…I am glad to hear that Sister Eliza's health allows her to work for the soldiers…she has so much done for my Co. You are mistaken about Col. [Stephen] Ellis being killed. He was not in the fight [Pocotaligo]. Major Harrison [11th South Carolina Infantry] was killed. Hardy Harrison's son, John. He was in command of the right & was shot on the train near Coosawhatchie. Lieut. William Speights was also killed…married a Miss. Goatee, his two sons are both in the service. The battle at Pocotaligo was one of the most desperate battles of the war. For the greater part of the day [Oct. 22, 1862] we had to fight against ten to our one [actually 2.2 to one] & nothing but the very great advantage we had in the ground saved our rail road…[at] old Pocotaligo…there is a great number of oaks and several houses, chimneys & the enemy had to advance along a narrow causeway for about three hundred yards in order to get to our men…then the bridge was torn up also. We lost about fifteen (15) killed and some fifty wounded. SEveral of the wounded will die. I am glad to hear from the servants. I hope they are all good and fateful. How will you manage to get their shoes this winter? Can you get them up there & if so, at what price?…A. B. Mulligan." Minor toning, else VG.
