War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Green Pond, [S. C.], Dec. 15, 1862, to his mother, in part: "…Frank is also quite well…I find my heavy clothing unpleasant…still am afraid to change them for thin clothing…I am trying to get off…in order to get you settled in a permanent place. I have a…place offered to me inn Orangeburg…the place is owned by my friend Dr. Cleckley…I can get the place cheap. Also…about eight acres of excellent land around the house…I can get a very trusty & faithful boy from Sarah Youman…he can make provision for us next summer…day light has come. It is now nearly seven o'clock & all's well…we…heard heavy cannonading last night to the south west…at Port Royal or somewhere about there…A. B. Mulligan." Minor toning, else VG.
