War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Green Pond, [S. C.], Mar. 2, 1863, to his sister Eliza, in part: "…I am sorry that I am compelled soon to take Simon away from you. His time will be out on 16th of this month & I don't know yet whether…I can get him another year. I wish to hire him again as my boy Sam is dead…unless I otherwise instruct you; you will have to let Simon start for Charleston on 14th inst. (Don't say anything to him about it now, whether or not I have hired him etc.) Tell him that his family are all…doing well. I saw them yesterday. They don't complain of anything…as much washing as they can do at 75 cents pr dozen & get soap found there…you had best get a boy to work your garden…A. B. Mulligan." VG.
