War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Charleston Hotel, Charleston, Mar. 9, 1863, to his mother, in part: "…I had the great pleasure to see the opening drama performed yesterday of the bombardment of our Dear old city…the result so far…has proved beyond any doubt that Charleston cannot be reduced by a water attack. Our batteries sunk the double turreted iron clad Keokuk & the celebrated steamer Ironsides is aid to be very hardly damaged, these two steam monsters are the strongest war boats afloat. We have…been looking for the enemy to resume the attack, but all is quiet so far in our harbor. We may have given them their fill. You would be surprised to see how cheerful & happy the people are here. Even the ladies are all as joyful & confident as can be. The suspense hanging over the city seemed to have vanished with the firing of the first gun. With about two thousand heavy cannon protecting here & a sufficient number of brave men…both for land & water defense old Charleston bid defiance to the enemy. In addition…there are many torpedoes and submarines in our channels that can be used to the destruction of the enemy's fleet should they come near…the city. All is quiet along the coast…I am very anxious to hear from you. Mrs. Raymond is in Orangeburg. Her son wishes to keep the boy you expected to get…A. B. Mulligan." VG.
