War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 4to. & 12mo., written (on treasury bank check, by Evans & Cogwell, Charleston, adversity paper) by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Green Pond, [S. C.], Mar. 22, 1863, to his mother, in part: "…Frank has chills again…I am giving him quinine. I go to Pocotaligo…to collect pay for my company…tell Nina I sold her silver for $8. Do pay what is due her…I have no soap except turpentine of very common quality. Castile soap sells at $3 per pound…I hope that you will get Mrs. Raymond's boy soon for I want Simon…her boy is a good standby & a good gardner etc. Can you do without Hager if you get Mrs. Raymond's boy? I ought to sell her while negroes are selling so high…tell Simon [their servant] that his family are quite well…the whole Battalion is here 8 miles below Green Point…Alfred B. Mulligan. [P. S.]…all the business of the camp devolves upon me as Maj. Jackson does not stay in camp…has his headquarters in Kernersville 1/2 mile distant…I have recently taken blue pills & have been beautiful by it. Frank is well. He is at prayer meeting tonight…we get first rate butter $150 pr pound…Lieut. Buckner's boy cooks very well…this is the poorest garden country I ever saw. The people seem to believe in…entirely in them…Alfred." Near fine with paper clip stain on first page, else VG.
