War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Charleston, Aug. 7, 1863, to his mother, in part: "…I went before a Confederate surgeon in Columbia…he gave me a 30 day furlough…I found my company…I am at Charleston Hotel…we have anew Col. appointed to my regiment. Col. John Dunovant is his name. Col. Dunovant is a brave man with much experience having been in the U. S. army before the war. He has been unfortunate, having been addicted to drinking, but he he has entirely reframed it is said…I hope [he] will make a good Col. We could not be worsted anyhow…A. B. Mulligan."
