War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Charleston, Aug. 28, 1863, to his mother, in part: "…the city is very quiet now. The inhabitants are moving up town to get beyond the reach of the enemy's shells. Houses on the Neck are in great demand while most houses down town are vacated…you no doubt notice that the enemy have taken our rifle pits on Morris Island…rifle pits are…temporary breastworks thrown up by our men at a distance of about 800 yards beyond Wagner to protect our outpost pickets. The enemy have gained but little & we have lost less in giving them up. The report that the enemy are within…a few hundred yards of Wagner is not so. 800 yards is the nearest…that they are now about at the "end of their row." Wagner is impregnable. Sumter is being rapidly turned into a battery which will be stronger than it once was. We are daily mounting guns. We are about mounting a [Whitworth] gun that will throw a bolt weighing 600 lbs…five or six mile…it will destroy everything within five mile of it in the shape of ironclads, etc…I may sen Simon, my cook, to Spartanburg to stay until I return. I will carry my other boy [?] with me…Genl. Ripley has been superseded in command here…a good thing…ought to have been long ago. Ripley will no longer have command here…A. B. Mulligan." VG.
