War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Kenansville, [N. C.], Sept 2, 1863, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…all my Co. is quite well…the country is high & the water is very good. Mineral Springs are about ten miles below here…we are encamped at the County Fair Grounds in a beautiful grove of oaks and hickory with a large cottage building and fair house in the center of our camp. There are two other Cos. of cavalry, two Cos. of artillery and two of infantry at the same camp. This place is..sixty (60) miles from the Yankee lines…we send out pickets as far…as forty miles, but the entire country from here to the Yankee lines &…to the sea…is occupied by the people [with] just the sum of though no war was going on & no enemy in the country. This whole section of country is a provision country…a plenty of evereything good to eat except flour…bacon can be had here from almost every farm at $1.00 pr pound, chickens at 50c to $1…our boys can get a first rate meal at almost any house from 50c to $1. Our camp is about a half mile from Kenansville, a village with three churches, one court house, one jail & about fifty dwellings, little & big. The boys tell me that there is any quantity of pretty girls here & they all like the South Carolina boys excepting our two Cos. The troops here are all North Carolina. The Yankees made a raid through this country about two weeks before we came here…they did not do much damage, excepting in a few instances. The people in this part of the state generally voted the Union ticket before the war & the Yankee are not as bitter against them as they are against us…let me know when Simon arrived, if the blinds…are all up…Alfred."
