War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Kenansville, [N. C.], Sept 13, 1863, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…Frank is quite well…went out on picket last Monday…we did not return to camp until nearly dark…I have made the acquaintance of several families living from 4 to 10 miles from camp. Most of whom are…intelligent people…one family, in particular…I am more than ordinarily pleased. The family of Mr….Fraser & their three grown daughters…they are all very intelligent, clever, good people, but the youngest of the three daughters participating interesting…she looks somewhat like Miss. Mattie Ball, but is taller & prettier. Now, I am not in love, am not engaged to her as some of her South Carolina boys become on first sight, but…I expect to court her…I am second in command in this part of the state & all this time am in command, the major having gone to Wilmington…Capt. Harlan & his officers & men are clever fellows & we get along very well together. Capt. Harlan & myself seeing ourselves among the ladies, but I have not yet made any acquaintances among the ladies in Kenanville. The ladies here, or most of them, have a jolly time of it in the way dances & etc. They often come out to see us drill, but with few noble exceptions, are indifferent about attending ton our sick soldiers. They have no ladies hospitals here…we have very little use for hospitals in general. We must however have more or less sickness all the time among 8 to 10 companies. What are green & dry cowhides worth in Spartansburg?…it is seven (7) mile from our camp to the post office. There is also a telegraph office at Magnolia & your telegraph…would reach me the same day if sent from…Columbia as soon as the train arrives there. If you should ever desire to telegraph me on important business you must not trust…the mail, but send a messenger to Columbia who will go to the telegraph office immediately after the arrival of the cars…A. B. Mulligan." Negligible tape repairs, else VG.
