War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 2pp. oblong 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Magnolia, N. C., April 25, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…I left Richlands…preparatory to starting for Virginia. I saw Col. Jeffords…on my way up…we expect to start for Va….next Wednesday…but Genl. Whitney, Comdr. of this department, has ordered us kept here until further orders…there is a good deal going on…in this eastern part of this state…Genl. Beauregard & Genl. Walker are both at Goldsboro…we have a great many troops further down toward the enemy…we have already taken Plymouth & 2500 prisoners…have almost driven the enemy from this state…I look for glorious victories & a speedy peace…Genl. Lee says the fighting will be over by June or July…I would remain down at Richlands until we capture New Bern so that I could…get you some good tea etc…A. B. Mulligan." Minor toning, else VG.
