War-date Confederate cavalry officer's raid letter, 2pp. large folio, written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Army of Northern Va., near Hanover Junction", [Va.], May 26, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "Today finds me in the great Army of Northern Va, Lee's army. I…joined the reserve portion of my Regt…we were ordered to report…to Genl. Hampton. On Monday last…the Regt…went out on a raid…after a lot of Negro Cavalry [4th Mass. Cavalry] who have been devastating the country in the neighborhood of Charles City. They have not yet returned…I have not seen…Col. Ball yet…our army here is in fine spirits an are confident of success in the coming battles. A battle must very soon be fought now. Grant has been advancing & Lee falling back for several miles &…Genl. Lee will very soon "pitch into him"…the hope of soon whipping the Yankee army & conquering a peace sustains the army & adds to the strength of our efforts…I bought the most convenient little cooking utensil at Richmond…it is a frying pan & plate so arranged that I can strap it to my saddle…A. B. Mulligan, Co. B, 5th S. C. Cavalry, Hampton's command." Minor spotting, else VG.
