War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 2pp. oblong 12mo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Atley's Depot 9 mile north of Richmond", [Va.], May 28, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…I am quite well today. We marched about 24 mile yesterday & joined…our Regt which went toward Charles City Court House…they all returned safely…with the exception of (none injured from my company). It was expected that Grant would give Lee battle near Hanover Junction. He crossed the North Anna River near that junction three nights ago with a portion of his army & Genl. Lee has fought him there, but Grant recrossed two nights ago & is now moving down towards Richmond on the north side of the South Anna River. Lee is consequently moving down the south side of the river in order to keep between Grant & Richmond. I do not expect a battle for several days…the next battle will be around Richmond…I do not se how Grant can possibly take that city. Richmond is situated on a very high ground with…ground sloping off in every direction…surrounded for some six or eight miles with the strongest fortifications…these fortifications form a succession of surrounding so that if the enemy take the entrenchments our army can fall back to still stronger cover. I must close-the order is to saddle up…A. B. Mulligan." Minor soiling, else VG.
