War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "James River 5 mile below Richmond", June 26, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…for several weeks now I have been acting as major both our Col. & Lt. Col. being wounded. On thursday 24th inst we fought Sheridan at White's Store [battle of St. Mary's Church or Nance's Shop] about 25 mile below Richmond on the peninsular. We whipped him once there before killing & capturing over 500. We roughted them completely…yesterday morning we left the battle field & have just crossed the James River about 5 mile below Richmond…we are…going to look after the Yankee raiders south of this…the service that we are doing is the most unusually severe that troops have ever performed…we have only 64 men for duty…in our whole Regt out of 1000…I am very thin…I have been in every battle since I came to Virginia…ten severe battles I have participated in…have not, so far, been hit by a bullet. Thank God for his kind care & protection…I hope that you will not be uneasy bout me…I am determined to stand up to it. If I die at my post I die in the discharge of duty. The proportion of killed in our Regt is small, not over 15…to date. We have had some 150 wounded. I have broke down all my horses including a Yankee horse which I captured. I will have to go to the rear for want of a horse…I keep Simon with me & he cooks very well. I left all my baggage in Richmond excepting a chance of underclothing which Simon carries in my saddle bags…A. B. Mulligan." Minor spotting, else VG
