War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. folio, written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Stoney Creek, Va.", July 10, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…since we whipped [James H.] Wilson…we do some picketing which does not amount to…much. We are always glad to get off on picket. The relief is [too] great…we'll often get a chance to forage for ourselves and our horses while out on picket. I do not do picket duty excepting when the whole Regt goes out…Cols. Dunovant & Jeffords were wounded, acting as major of the Regt. Col, Dunovant…will return for duty in a few days having recovered from his wounds and then I will resume command of my company…I have mounted nearly all of my dismounted men on Yankee horses which we captured…I am lying under a shelter made of two Yankee blankets pinned together with wooden pins & stretched over a pole…my bed is made of a few green leaves with…Yankee blanket spread over them…I have not heard from home since sometime in June. The Rail Road from Magnolia, N. C. to Richmond having been broken up by the enemy in a few places…everything is exceedingly quiet as far as the cavalry is concerned…we will not have much more cavalry fighting this summer as we have whipped all the Yankee cavalry and drove them out of the country or, at least…behind the Yankee army…Genl. Hampton says that we have seen more service and done more hard fighting since we came to Va than all the other cavalry have done here since the war commenced. I speak of Butler's Brigade composed of three South Carolina Regts. The 4th commanded by Col. Benj. Rutledge. The 5th by Col. Dunovant and 6th by Col. Aikens. It is…expected that we will return to South Carolina sometime in Oct…I am in hopes that the war will end by then…we have no preaching or any other public religious services in our Brig. The service has been so very hard that the pious people have all died out…A. B. Mulligan." Minor spotting, else VG
