War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "5 mile north of Stoney Creek, P. & W. Rl. Road", July 14, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…our money is getting much more valuable out here of late. Gold & silver is selling in Richmond…from 12 to 14 for 1. It was about 30 for 1 a few weeks ago. Our money is now wroth nearly as much as the Yankee currency is worth with them. This is good news for us…we heard yesterday that Sheridan was moving out again on another raid but I do not believe it. He is still, I think, about City Point recruiting his horses & remounting his dismounted men. I have no doubt but that he will attempt another raid perhaps on the Rail Roads about Weldon, N. C., but it must be a few weeks more I think…the Yankees are still shelling Petersburg…doing about the same damage there that they do to Charleston…A. B. Mulligan." Light soiling, else VG
