War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 2pp. oblong 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "In Camp Butler's Brig., 23 mile North West of Richmond, Va.", Aug. 14, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…we are on our way…to the valley of Va. I am glad of the chance for we go…where plenty of good living for man & horse can be had…we will be in the enemy's country, but the enemy have made raids & intercepted communications between the Valley & the South. I must…submit to…providence to take care of you until I can get back again. We have brilliant prospects ahead now. The enemy are almost at the ned of their "row" and I think we will have peace soon. Col. Ball has already gone to the Valley…Frank is with us & is quite well. I am & have for some time past been acting as Lieut. Col. of our Regt & have command of the Regt when we go into the fight. The major is an old man & is lame & cannot get about on foot…we do nearly all pour fighting on foot. Our Col. is promoted Brig. Genl., Lieut. Col. Jeffords is very badly wounded & may never be able top take command again…the maj. will soon resign. I think it is therefore probable that I will be promoted. I have, so far, been able to give satisfaction to the Genls. &…trust to be able in [the] future to further merit their approval…I have now only two thousand dollars in the Farmer's Bank of Virginia. I have one thousand dollars in hand of Messr. Evans & Cogwell of Columbia, S. C. My trunk, mess chest…are at the South Carolina Soldier's home in Richmond. Mr. McMaster is in charge of the So. Ca. Soldier's Home…A. B. Mulligan." Light soiling, else VG.
