War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Camp Butler's Brig. Hampton's Cavalry Corps. In the field 7 mile south west of Petersburg", Sept. 21, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…everything is quiet along our lines and Grant…is mourning over the loss of those 2500 head of fine beeves we took from him the other day…one of the best jokes connected with the capture of the beeves & the bringing them away. Grant got word of Genl. Hampton's expedition & attempted to recapture the cattle…he attacked our boys with great fury but the gallantry of our boys & their regard for 2435 head of fat cattle…caused them to repulse every one of the Yankee charges & finally to drive the Yankees from the field-the joke is this, that overtime the Yankee Genls. would order a charge & bring their men…toward our lines our boys would bellow tremendously, very much to the annoyance of the Yankees…much to say to them. We have gotten your beeves…Pat was well as usual…has a very fine crop this year…he has a prime negro boy & woman hired…they have done well for him…A. B. Mulligan…". Negligible tape repairs, else VG.
