War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. folio, written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Camp of Dismounted Battalion, Butler's Brig. near Burgess' Mills", Oct. 13, 1864, to his mother & three sisters, in part: "…I am still with the dismounted battalion…I prefer it to the mounted service out here where horse suffer much…we will not have much fighting thus far around Petersburg or Richmond. Grant is afraid to attack Lee. He is evidently afraid to extend his left wing any further toward the South Side Rail Road…if he extends his lines further in this direction Lee will cut him in two, retake Petersburg & Weldon Rail Road and capture and kill a large portion of his army. Our army…is daily increasing by the return of wounded and sick soldiers and the recent order returning to the field all detailed men…has largely increased our army…in strength…brighter prospects await us…I never experienced any suffering or privations whatever during the war…while I am somewhat singular in the enjoyment of these comforts out here in the field there are thousands who wants like to have as well as I do…the cause of my country I regard as primary. The word of our noble President are coming true in regard to Sherman's occupation of Atlanta. "The farther he penetrates our country. The sooner difficult will be his escape." With Sherman's army captured-Grant whipped back to his gun boats. [Sterling] Price entering into St. Louis-and the enemy defeated at almost every point the war cannot lost long. Let no one despair. If our people at home will do true duty. The time is near at hand when our country will be freed and out homes again unmolested...A. B. Mulligan." Negligible damp stains, else VG.
