War-date Confederate cavalry officer's (working copy) letter, 2pp. large folio, written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Spartanburg, S. C. January 10, 1865 to Capt. Zimmerman Davis, in part: "Yours…asking me to waive my right to promotion…is to hand. I cannot in justice to myself & my friends grant your request. As to say I am not an ambitious man…I intend to claim the position to which I am entitled to in the Regt. I am obliged to you Capt. for your kindness in having me reported "absent sick"…also for your good wishes for my recovery. My wound does not heal fast, it still gives me much pain…I am still suffering very much with my wounds. There are pieces of bone which must work out before the wound can heal. I trust…to be with you by March or April…A. B. Mulligan". Negligible tape repairs, else VG.
