A great war-date Confederate civilian's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by S. V. Bosserman, [n. p., but possibly West View, Augusta Co., Va.], May 13, 1863, in part: "…I suppose you heard the bad news that Gen. [Stonewall] Jackson is dead; and three of Bayles Boys are wounded Will, George and Dave. [all enlisted in Co. F, 5th Virginia Vols.] Will is wounded in the arm and George in his shoulder and Dave has the little finger shot of[f] his right hand…I am tired. I have bin working like a old horse all day and I have the spring fever…I cant write for looking at Lewis Wiseman. He is hauling rails rite by the house; He is a rite spray old fellow…you say your Black eye is too young for you. Come down and bring him…maybe we can make a trade…some of the girls in Rockbridge are smitten with Mr. Evans…I do not know how much he thinks of them. For my part I care nothing about him. He don't care about poor people, but I think myself just as good as he…Lewis had his face marked. He went to take Bill Cason [Pvt. William G. Cason, 57th Virginia, absent 6/15/62] to Staunton and his wife got the boot jack after him. He said she was the first woman that struck him. While…hunting deserters he said they often cursed him, but they never hit him. He said they would have killed him if it had not bin for a pistol he had for in his pocket. He don't like to hear about it…S. V. Bosserman." William F. Bailey (1838-1901) enlisted as private in Co. F, 5th Virginia at West View, Augusta Co, Va.; WIA 11/13/62; WIA Chancellorsville; promoted sergeant 1863; WIA Smithfield Crossing, WV 8/29/64; surrendered Appomattox Court House, Va. 4/09/65. George A. Bailey (1839-1903) enlisted as corporal in Co. F, 5th Virginia at West View, Augusta Co, Va.; POW Antietam; WIA Chancellorsville; WIA & POW Spotsylvania; exchanged 5/21/1864. David M. Bailey (1844-1908) enlisted as private in Co. F, 5th Virginia in, Augusta Co, Va.; WIA Chancellorsville & Gettysburg during Pickett's Charge; POW Spotsylvania Court House; confined Fort Delaware; member Stonewall Jackson Camp 25, UCV; buried Hebron Presby. Church Cemetery, West View, Va. Also included is the original dual, Le Rue printed, Jeff Davis stamped transmittal cover addressed, "Miss. A. H. Bosserman, Cedar Grove Mills, Rockbridge Co., Va." Both near fine.
