Confederate soldier’s letter written by “A(lexander) Fre(erick) Fleet, who mustered into VA 26th Infantry, wounded June 22, 1864, 2pp., VG. Dateline, In the Trenches, Petersburg, Wednesday, Nov. 2, 1864, in part, “Just after we arrived, about dark, a small party of men was seen approaching our works, opposite the 46th & the men immediately commenced firing on them. The men coming up called out that they were ‘friends’ & begged our men not to shoot & the ‘Field Officer of the day’ from another brigade, who the men thought was perfectly acquainted with the ground, etc., actually drew his sword & oredered our men not to fire as those were our poickets. The firing was stopped for for a few minutes & the ‘Yankees’, for such they proved to be, entered a part of our works, drew their seven shooters from under their overcoats & demanded a surrender. This was where a piece of artillery was placed and no infantry. As soon as the infantry found out the state of affairs, they immediately charged the Yankees out of the works, capturing 17, killing 2 & wounding several. Unfortunately however, the larger portion escaped, carrying with them Colonel Harrison, L. Col. Wise of the 46th & Lt. Josiah Ryland of the 34th, who had hurried up to find out the cause of the disturbance. ...”
