LEE, Agnes (1840-1873). Called simply "Agnes," she was the third daughter and fifth child of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his wife, Mary Anna Custis Lee. Like her three sisters, she never married chiefly because the General simply could not let go of his girls. However, there was one young soldier who was determined to make Agnes his bride - but he got nowhere since the General proclaimed him too "unsettled" to take a wife. Agnes attended the Virginia Female Institute in her youth and later on she did much traveling with her father as a companion and nurse. In small part, “Whenever I pass the thousands of unknown unmarked graves that cover our Southern Land, I feel God has given some comfort to those, probably far distant friends, who mourn for him. they have been enabled to disconnect his immortal soul from his perishable body and to feel they are only separated from him for a time. Have you ever met with some lines that seem to be ringing in my ears just now - read a long time ago. ‘The gleam of patriot sword shall rise, As fast as prayers to heaven, And he who for his own land dies, Never dies unshriven!’ ... How peaceful and lovely everything must look at Myrtle Grove. It certainly is a great temptation to return with Mr. George. But we all think it best to remain together now and wait further development of events. ..”
