A good war-date Confederate woman's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Mollie I. Gilmore, McGaheysville, [Va.], Sept. 1, 1864, to "My dear Mag[gie B. Lupton, Winchester, Va.]," in part: "…I suppose you feel very much relieved being sometimes in Dixie. [Maggie's home town, Winchester, Va., changed hands over eighty times during the Civil War.] Oh, how often have I thought of you, being cut off from loved ones, but I have great hopes of this cruel was ending this winter. I presume your brothers have paid you a visit during Early's stay down the Valley. [Surprisingly, there are nine men named Lupton, all whom served in the 39th Virginia Battalion Cavalry, from Winchester.] How is the sick one. I have a real lonely time…now Papa has gone to Richmond…[I] do not know what would become of me her. My neighbors not kind to me. They come here and spend much time with Mary. My facility for sending this is caused by one of Mr. Wheeler's brothers [possibly 1st Sgt. Benjamin F. Wheeler, 25th Virginia Infantry] having been wounded at Williamsport…last Friday…we presume from the contents of his letter he is badly wounded. Has been a true and fateful soldier during the whole was [and] has been in at least thirty battles, come off safe and unhurt until last friday. Says hospital fare is quite rough…send him…some refreshments…it will be highly appreciated by a good Confederate soldier. I feed and dress the onus of all that come near me. He is in the Winchester hospital. I expect to have a wounded soldier to stay with us until he gets well. [He[ received his wound last Sunday…at Charlestown, was shot through the shoulder…you delayed writing so long I feel…anxious to hear from you. Especially wish to hear the truth of the treatment the citizens [suffer] by the Yankees. I was told they were burning all the grain and farming implements as they went…there is a good prospects of peace than ever…Mollie I. Gilmore." Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover addressed, "Miss. Maggie B. Lupton, care of William Russell, Winchester, Va." Both overall VG to near fine.
